With all the discussion I went to an online version of Roberts Rules to find that:

A nomination does not have to be seconded.

Our bylaws are inconsistent with Roberts Rules for:

9.4.1.4. Each nomination must be seconded for acceptance.

You can see this for yourself in:

'Table of Rules Relating to Motions' at:

http://www.caves.org/nss-business/bog/app-r.html

Sorry about that. We do our best but we are not always right.
The bylaws will have to be corrected.

Max

Will you go back to your Cheeseburgers in Paradise....
We had this all worked out and now you're throwing a whole new wrench into the program.

So now what? Where does this put us? Do we still have to wait until the November meeting to announce the nominations and then they will just continue as normal without having to have a second? Can't we decide we want them to have a second even if it is not RR correct?

Tammy,

All valid questions (and mustard on my face.)

1st, I think the nominations would be just like the presidential race currently in progress. No one is yet nominated although many are running for their respective party nomination.

Nominations, as Scott pointed out, will open with a majority vote to the question (no second required) at the November meeting and may be closed anytime prior to the election with a seconded motion and a two thirds vote from the delegates.

My head is starting to hurt.

You're just in time.

In time for what? And what *was* the result of the beginning of this thread? Who's been nominated? Any resolution on the "Robert's Rules" issue? Just out of curiosity, do the bylaws explicitly state that they must comply with Robert's Rules of Order, or are the bylaws the bylaws, based on those rules, but as adopted, a stand-alone set of procedures?

It's like a Clancy novel, man... I've got to know! How's it end? How do the pieces all fit together? What happens to Jack?

We are not obligated to follow Robert's Rules of order, there for we followed our by-laws. I nominated both Rich and Jay and they were both seconded. The election will happen at the January meeting.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like a very well thought-out solution. Good luck to both candidates. And Scott, no one will ever truly fill those shoes of yours. You are one of the few modern day legends. You have established a fantastic legacy for one of these men to carry forward.
