Gas line

Does anyone know how deep natural gas lines are buried? In power line type area's. Just curios.

Maybe you could find the code for the state. Probably depends on the size of the pipe.

Don't call the gas company.

Are there tags on the buriel markers? I think the phone company and fiber optic buried lines are marked with the depth of the line.

My family owns property that has a gas line on it. Let me ask and see if anyone knows off hand.

I remember when I was a kid they buried the ones down the street from my house.

I think they were only like 6 feet or so down, I remember it being similar to when they ran the Water lines.

I know its nothing official, hope it helps.

The reason I ask is, recently I saw a place where one of the markers was ran over and the mud hole around it was all torn up. Just wondering what the dangers are. Not for me, I didn't go near it.

Driveshaft Hill in RI had the same thing, the mud hole was deepest on the right where gas line marker was too, over 3 feet at least. Spooky.

Gas transmission lines typically aren't buried very deep. 2-3 feet max. Usually it's only to keep people from F-ing with them, there's no danger of freezing. Lines in the cities or in the roadways are different.

Would this be a certain northern RI area?

If you get caught wheeling on a transmission gas line in VT, it's a mandatory fine and points on your license. They usually run an add in the local paper every spring to remind all off-roaders.

To be clear, I was NOT wheeling these gas lines.

I have seen a new gas line installed in Southern MA many years ago. I remember it being buried at least three feet down.

Ironically in this month's gas bill  There was a whole little pamphlet on gas transmission lines and the care you need to take around them with Dig Safe, etc. However there was no mention of typical embedment.
