The price of gas and the sport of 4 wheeling

Postby PatriotJeep » Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:57 pm

The price of gas and the sport of 4 wheeling.
I'm paying $3.93 just heard it will go up %15 this weekend.
How do you think this will this effect the sport?
OFR it's far out there.
Mabell a little closer .
The Gutter closer.
Coyhill close to a lot of us.

With the price of gasoline I will never have another gas powered 4x4. If I get another 4x4 it wil be a VW diesel powered Zuk running on WVO. I bet members skip club runs to save the money to attend the Fall Crawl.

What's WVO. Is the Bio?

Postby Mikey » Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:32 pm

waste vegetable oil - heat it up and a diesel will burn it straight. Some of the first diesel engines ran off peanut oil.

bio-diesel is made from vegetable oil.
B100 - 100% bio
B20 - 20% bio, 80%diesel

It's just about 3 hours from me to F&F - about $70 in fuel just to get there and back towing.

The point being people will wheel places closer to their home?

My concern is the impact this will have on the turnout of our volunteers

I think you have a typo, you forgot the d

Seriously though Sunshine is getting about 8.5 mpg. I have to take that into consideration when budgeting my money for wheeling trips but I know that going into it so I plan accordingly.

I'm sure for some it will effect how many times they go out, or how close they are to the spots but like anything if they want it bad enough they will find a way.

Comparatively speaking a day wheeling with friends is not that expensive.

Attend a Red Sox game! Tickets, parking, food, and BEER!
FAMILY of 4 out to nice dinner - I'm not talking McD's,I'm talking Steak!
I haven't golfed in years! Greens fees,cart,BEER@19th hole, balls,etc.
Camping! Gear needed,food ,drink,campground fees(if required)!

Oh and did I forget to add GAS to drive to these destinations?

4 wheeling is a hobby where gas is required. Expect the cost, and feel lucky you aren't yet paying fees to run public or private land!

Oh, Rich, stay away from Coy Hill as I hear EPO scanner when on duty and they have been patroling up there. STAY THE F... OUT!

Thankyou

2.5L's get decent mileage on the trail. I did a little over 18 MPG pulling my trailer for the cleanup after slapping on my smaller 33's. It's all about gearing.

Rich let it go. Who wants to ride on a road I can drive my stock 2500HD with Gov-loc in the rear. For that matter my old Zuk Sidekick would drive on the road no problem. We have more land than we know what to do with. Lets use our energy and resources on that land.

I challenge any of you to drive this section of road It's good and 4WD
maybe winch and we should not give up anything It's close to me and I'm not letting go. I can make it work and plan to do a run there.
Let me take over where Joe left off. I will find out the real scoop.

No that's not true. In mass we abandon maintenence. If they discontinue it then it is could be gone. but not allways .It will take a town meeting and all the land oweners and towns will need to be there and have say. So It's not gone.

Has anyone cleared up the conversation that "where there is WMA land on both sides of the road, that the WMA also claims the road also"?

I do not have an EPO handbook to refer to their regulations.

No offense Rich, but every trail you ever brought Patriot on, if you couldn't make it, then it wasn't passable.

Then I would drive right up. 8)

Ok enouigh of the bickering. Rich is free to run the roads if he wants, the "no go" policy has been lifted.

We all understand Joe has strictly advised against running there and 21 of the 22 clubs we have will probably follow his suggestions.

Rich so everyone knows I am telling you this in advance. If you bring Patriot there, and run the roads and you get tickets or fines or any kind of legal punishment that reflects negatively on the NEA and it's member clubs, I will do everything I can to see disciplinary action is pursued under the following by laws:

Reasons for Disciplinary Action, (not limited to the following):
7.9.1. Any action which, at the discretion of the BOD, alienates or causes distress of a recreational use land owner

7.9.5. Causing the Association Pain, Damage or Defamation of Character

maybe if you're wheeling a toyota corolla. ive seen dead stock tacoma's go through on 28" aquatreads.
last year i drove in from rt 9 to deliver a driveshaft in 2wd/open dif with a toyota on 33" street tires, no problems.

is there a chance that you're making the place out to be more than it is?

were seeing lower turnouts for deepwoods runs this year. im sure gas has something to do with it. were doing a lot of carpooling to events and some guys ridealong one weekend and drive their own the other weekend.

we have been working land that is closer to where the members are as well this year, as opposed to 1 hour drive +. you cant please everyone, but you can try to help out some.

If you have the land, it's the way to go. Most contractors will be more than happy to get rid of rocks from a jobsite, I know I am. Just make sure you get it clean and not full of junk (stumps, const debris, etc.).

So with gas prices over $4.00 running Coyhill makes sence to some of us.
The Assoc. should surport keeping Coyhill open. I do not think they will close the roads. Traffic is down up there and that's good. But the roads are open to us.

How do you KNOW and or PROVE this?! You been up there driving/taking photos?

Latest conversation I had talked of much misuse and many NEW burn/drinking/partying areas, ALONG the road!

I haven't had the free time, nor interest, to go hiking up there. I've been working with EC/NEA members scouting trails, cutting new trails, creating more contacts/friends, and having a great time doing it! MAYBE you should also take this approach -IT'S WORKING :!:
