I thought some of you may be interested in reading this story. It shows how much this state has their heads up their arse. A group does something for near nothing and gets shut down. Now who pays?!?

WESTPORT ?

The Massachusetts Beach Buggy Association will not be putting up the winter fence at Horseneck Beach this year because the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees the beach, has decided that the work will be done by conservation workers.

The fence provides erosion control.

For the past 10 or so years, the winter fence has been erected by buggy association volunteers who, as a reward and to make work possible, were allowed to stay one night in the Horseneck Beach camping area, which is closed for the winter. Similar swaps of camp space for labor have been stopped at conservation department properties all over the state, said Wendy Fox, the department?s press secretary.

?There were too many violations, trash,? Fox said, saying those violations were statewide and not specific to Horseneck Beach or the buggy association.

?It?s not aimed at them,? Fox said of the buggy association. ?It?s statewide, and there can be no exceptions.

?The fence is being put up now,? Fox said Tuesday.

On Wednesday at Horseneck, about 200 yards of fence made of thin red slats and wire anchored to steel poles was on view. The fence is about halfway between the water and the beginning of the sand dunes.

Peter Murray, president of the buggy association, said his group isn?t happy with losing the chance to donate the labor and enjoy a night in the campground.

?It was very unsatisfactory,? Murray said of the decision. ?We tried to get a resolution from them for months.?

?They didn?t tell us why,? Murray said. ?The campground was closed when they let us stay there.?
In existence since 1950, the buggy association describes itself on its website as a ?family oriented group, comprised of men, women & children who are concerned with beach conservation and access, access not only for our members but for the general public.?
