I know today is just an other day for yall but for me and a select few this day has alot of meaning 8 years ago today my unit crossed in to Iraqi to remove the dictator Saddam Hussien from power in Iraqi. In the process of doing so 3 soldiers from my company were lost
SGT Crockett
PFC Rockhold
SFC Davis

Sgt Crockett was killed when an enemy RPG round enter his HMMWV and shrapel severed his jugular.
PFC Rockhold was killed when an enemy combatant in civilian closed walked up behind him while he was directing traffic and fired a 9mm pistol to the back of his head.
SFC Davis was killed when his HMMWV rolled over in to a small pond on the outskirts of Baghdad International Airport.

A year later I was again deployed on 20 March 2004 to Afghanistan during that deployment my battional lost 3 men
CPL Gomez
CPL Diaz
SPC Wells

CPL Gomez was killed when an IED exploded under the HMMWV he was driving. He was keep on life support in Germany till his Twin brother also a soldier to arrive

CPL Diaz was killed when the HMMWV he was riding in rolled over on top of him while conducting night operations along the Pakistan border.

SPC Wells was killed by enemy fire during an ambush. SPC Wells was returning to his observation post when the enemy attacked with small arms fire and RPG rounds. SPC Wells was killed by rounds received to his body.

These 6 men gave there all defending our right to go to the bar and drink beer, to go out and wheel our rigs as we see fit. So please take a moment out of your busy day and think of these men and there families.

As a fellow grunt that experienced similiar horrors I know how these specific dates stick in my mind. We will always carry the baggage of the horro with us, but remembering them will bring them the honor they never were able to receive

If you are able,
save them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may
or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.
