Dear Fellow Off-Road Enthusiast:

On Tuesday, November 7, 2006 you witnessed an event that is certain to be one of the most significant events in the history of this country! Mark it on your calendars so you can tell your grandchildren what this country once was like.

For years our nation has been expending huge amounts of its resources to enforce a law that provides protection to a wide range of species - that include bugs and weeds - while people in third world countries are suffering from malnutrition and disease. WELL, I ASSURE YOU, THE SITUATION IS GOING TO GET WORSE!!

The defeat of Congressman Richard Pombo, Chairman of the Resources Committee in the House of Representatives, is an absolute guarantee that we will never, in this lifetime, see the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) modified to put concern for our citizens back to a priority level afforded other species. No other legislator in Congress is concerned enough to take the heat and the attacks that Pombo has endured - only to be defeated for sticking by his beliefs. In fact, the results of this mid-term election will be seen by Congress as a mandate that the people want even more environmental controls - not less. The Endangered Species Act will continue to replace our Constitution as the most important law of the land!

Chairman Pombo - like many legislators - could have easily won this race by resorting to typical political prostitution. He could have sold off his scruples to the environmentalists for their votes. He could very easily have agreed to back off on his efforts to bring reasonableness to the ESA in return for their support - and he would have definitely kept his job. He did not consider this for a moment! As a result, the Democrats and the environmentalists targeted him as number one to be defeated in the country - and by dumping massive amounts of resources into his district - they have succeeded. So he can only wonder if it is good that he still has his reputation in tact, but can no longer serve his country! Apparently our fellow citizens prefer political prostitution to political chastity! What a sad statement this is about the political system in this nation.

To make matters worse, Nancy Pelosi will become the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. She will be in a perfect position to bring her extreme environmental agenda to Congress. Efforts by the Bush administration and Chairman Pombo to make public lands available for public use will by totally reversed.

My friends, I cannot think of a worse possible scenario to impact our ability to maintain vehicle access to public lands in this country than what happened in this election. THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT EVERYONE WHO RECEIVES THIS MESSAGE WILL BE NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THIS ELECTION! This is a very bad day in history for American Citizens who enjoy motorized recreation in this country.

Just in case you think this is my personal estimate of the situation, I am pasting below an article that describes the celebration by the environmentalists:

2. CAMPAIGN 2006: Richard Pombo toppled in Calif. as enviro groups rejoice

Alex Kaplun, E&E Daily reporter

Environmental groups scored a major victory this morning when their top target in the 2006 election cycle -- House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) -- joined the ranks of Republican incumbents who went down to an insurgent wave of new Democrats.

Shortly after 4 a.m. this morning, the tight race between Pombo and Jerry McNerney (D) was called for the challenger as McNerney held a 6 percent edge with 95 percent of precincts reporting.

Pombo's defeat -- viewed by most experts as extremely unlikely just a few months ago -- was in large part manufactured by corruption charges levied against the seven-term lawmaker and slight demographic shifts in the district, not to mention an all-out financial effort from environmental groups.

Environmental groups are already touting the race as perhaps their biggest Election Day accomplishment in several years because virtually every major organization poured money into the contest, far exceeding even the funds spent by the McNerney campaign itself.

"Pombo's loss represents the most significant electoral victory the environmental movement has seen in decades," said Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife. "It should now be clear to all that we have the political strength to take on and defeat extreme anti-environmental politicians, even powerful chairmen of congressional committees."

For much of the summer, the Pombo contest was largely off the radar of both the national parties and pundits, and the incumbent was widely expected to cruise to re-election. But a worsening national climate and lingering voter dissatisfaction with the incumbent allowed McNerney to stay in a dead heat with Pombo, and national parties and interest groups began to pour money into the race.

The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee alone spent more than $1.3 million to protect the incumbent. But Pombo became a target of the environmental groups for aggressively promoting an agenda that included an expansion of oil and gas drilling and an effort to rewrite the Endangered Species Act.

"[Pombo's] defeat removes one of the main driving forces behind much of Congress' anti-environmental agenda and hopefully will pave the way for a saner, science-driven approach to our nation's environmental challenges," Schlickeisen said.

Cheer up, it's a mid-term. If history proves itself, the Democrats will again stumble over their collective johnsons by the time the next election cycle is upon us.

No doom and gloom, yet... Let them focus on things like fixing the war.
