Class VI in Bradford NH

Monday, June 23rd 6pm at Bradford NH Townhall
There is a meeting regarding a petition to close Class VI Roads in the town of Bradford NH.

We have one member to represent our club, but having more people from other clubs would be good.

CORRECTION, June 16, 2025 - There is a town meeting, but rumors of a petition to close the roads are false. That being said, on June 9th, a person attended a town meeting and made a presentation on behalf of his company, on a false pretense, that there was a reason to "defend" 4x4 access. It has opened a can of worms and tainted some select board members and town residents.
I would suggest that if anyone attends the meeting, observe and report. We have a professional volunteer with years of experience in conservation and environmental work/studies to address concerns from the point of view of non-profit clubs. The town may do whatever they want with their Class VI Roads, and we want them to want to keep them open.

This was on my radar, but I've been away for work since June 2nd.

I will be there and as well others from NEWJO

This is to close ALL Class VI roads in Bradford, which many of us use.

Meeting starts at 6pm

Bradford Town Hall
75 W Main St,
Bradford, NH 03221

We now have a few members involved and one has experience on conservation commissions.

I've been in communication with a few interested parties on the class VI road topics throughout NH. On June 2nd, we were looking into this issue, but we could not find any specific agenda items. One of these individuals attended the last selectman meeting on Monday 6/9 and there was no mention of a class VU issue then.

Do you know where they found this information on the petition? Can you share this?

There's no petition. I guess the agenda item was building structures on class vi roads, then Rob Shido from ENH went to the meeting and spoke for 26 minutes and answered questions. I'm sure he meant well and was trying to help.
Instead, the select board said we're going to have to have an open meeting.
The attendees were very concerned that he is selling maps and people are paying him for guided trail rides.

1hr34min to 2 hour mark.
An abutter on the conservation committee stated groups of 20 to 30 vehicles pass her house at least once per week.
A few people said, if there's an accident, the town's 1st responders would be heavily taxed to perform a rescue because of the road conditions.

I guess this was a none issue but now the can of worms has been opened.

Thanks Mike for this information, it's great to have insight on this topic and should concern all of us in one way or another!

Rob brought this to my attention early last week. He informed me there was a local woman seeking to close the class VI roads in Bradford and was going to attend the meeting on Monday the 9th as "Class VI" was on the agenda (no real details......I had a conversation with him last night where he mentioned he spoke with the town, but he didn't relay info where he put his foot in his mouth.

I was waiting for more information before I took action, of course i saw your post about this and assumed that that you had confirmation that I didn't.

Not for nothing, but Bradford has a lot of crunchy left leaning individuals.

I'm going to the next meeting on the 23rd, sounds like its going to be damage control. I expect some other locals will attend as well.

Be prepared to say nothing, we have to keep our cool. ENH went in with prepared statements that weren't related to the topic of building structures on Class VI Roads. The select board decided on June 9th to have an upcoming, open meeting, regarding recreational use on Class VI.

A can of worms was opened, and we need to put the lid back on. I would like to invite you to a Google Meets meeting with Mohawk, Ridge Back Guide Service and ask you to represent NEWJO. I think Rob had good intentions but we have to do some damage control. The town seems to now think that most recreational users from out of town are paying for ENH maps and Guides. Please send me your current email address.

Bill said he will have the invite ready around 6/7pm tonight. His brother, Paul, is compiling our 39 emails (lol) to summarize it for all of us.

Thank you, Scott.

I've been here for access for 20 years and have no plans to quit.
I was fortunate enough to meet Scott at Carnage Hill in April of 2005.

After 20 years, I needed a break to focus on myself, but after nearly 10 years I'm back :)

The town of Bradford has issued a statement and posted that road closure is not a topic and it is just a rumor.

There is a lesson to be learned from this situation and a few take aways that we, as a collective group, should take away from this.

I had a call with some of the members Mohawk, let's follow up on that get together the deliverables we discussed.

We should also ensure that a call to arms is necessary before posting, not pointing fingers because I'm guilty of this as well.

Finally, we should put together a coalition with other interested parties (NEA and its affiliate clubs, ENH, and others) so we are all on the same page.

Agreed on all. And let's be proactive.
