4-14-2012 EARTH DAY CLEAN-UP TAUNTON, MA

Postby TexsDream77 » Sun Mar 04, 2012 5:20 pm

The South Shore Wheelers will be having an Earth Day Cleanup in Taunton, MA on Saturday April 14, 2012. We will be picking up large piles of debris that we didn't get to 2 years ago as well as a few small piles that have acumulated over the past 2 years. Any help with manpower will be graciously accepted.

I would like to again thank everyone that came out to help us with this in 2010. We had a huge task and we acomplished more than I had hoped for in a short amount of time. With the help of many NEA clubs members We picked up over 16,000lbs of garbage and about 1000 tires. USA Jeep Owners was HUGE in the success of the previous clean-up. They showed up with a huge crew (and huge trucks) and took on the task of the tire problem on Rocky Woods. The remaining task is not as big, but will still require some heavy trucks to get rid of the piles of debris. Most of the piles are not as easy to get to as the one's we got to last time.

Meeting at 8am Behind the McDonalds on Rt 44 in Taunton, MA: click here for MAP

Trail Rating: 1-2. Full Size trucks and or trailers can easily make it through most of one trail without issue. The other trail is slightly tighter, but has less debris on it.

Just curious, is this a different section of the area that was cleaned last year or the same area that has been "dumped" after the 1st clean-up?

There really hasn't been much re-accumulation to speak of aside from one spot just off the road. This is to go back and get the rest of the stuff that we didn't get the first time. 2 years ago we got a huge bulk of the problem with the trash and tires. We only made it about half way up the trail where the larger piles were. There is at least 2 good size piles on one trail and 1 on the other. 2 years ago we also seem to have pulled at least 80-90% of the tires out of the woods. Like I said before, we were amazed at how much we were able to get done in one morning with the help of the other NEA clubs that came to help.

We were planning to go back last year, but with Easter and another Earth Day Clean-up in RI that is a much bigger project, we didn't go back to Taunton yet.

Hopefully this year we will get more local help too!

The contact from Tire Warehouse is likely interested again. We met and talked about it recently.

NEXTERA

We had a great day yesterday. About 20 people showed up from 4 clubs with pick-up trucks, a couple of dump trailers, and a dump truck. We were able to clean ALL of the large debris piles from both main roads. A City Counsilman came over at lunch time and then asked to go for a ride through the property. He seems very pro-active in keeping the area clean and open to the public. The only thing left to do on the main roads is a few areas of light trash. We ran out of time and were unable to do anymore.

We did unfortunatly run into a new large debris/dump site off of the main road down an illegal side trail MrMike's (USA Jeep Owners)kids found it while walking around actually
