HELP!!! Forum Upgrade

Postby Scott Hatch » Tue May 23, 2006 1:14 pm

We need to upgrade the forum ASAP.

We've recently undergone numerous spam attacks. These spam accounts are using the @nea4wd.org to send spam email. My home email has been flooded over the past week with hundreds of bounced emails. The only way we can thrawt this is to upgrade the forum.

Can someone help?

As a band aid till you get upgraded you might be able to prevent spammers by changing the enable account activation to admin. This means you would have to approve everyone who applies though.
It is on the configuration page from your admin console.

You should receive an email request with some sort of pending user application to whatever email is the master account for the "God" admin. On our site we have an "approve membership" button on the admin page that shows pending application. Select approve or deny and that person gets emailed a response.

OOps We are on 2.0.18 though. I don't think 2.0.11 has that option. Sorry my bad.

RWS can't do the upgrade for you?
I had some bugs after we did our last one and I still don't really "know" why. I wouldn't want to be responsible for bring your site down.

We are a charity case for RWS, the techincal help we get is typically free of charge. Doing a forum upgrade is time consuming which means $$$

If you or someone elset can do the upgrade I can put you in touch with Rich.

For now I need to delete another 5-10 spam accounts...

I'm not the guy with the skills in this department, but if a programmer or some computer geeks (no offense) of that sort are what is needed I have quite a few friends that write code at EMC, and a bunch of friends in IT. If they are the type of people that we need a favor from, lemme know, some of them owe me!

It should only take about an hour, if you know what your doing. It is just a matter of FTPing the new rev over the existing software. I've only done it once and it didn't go very smooth for me. Probably because I was winging it.
The other thing to consider is some of your customization may get lost in the upgrade which means you'd have to make all the changes again. We lost a couple things I haven't been able to get back when we did ours.

So Marty in answer to your question, yes an IT guy should have all the basic skills to complete the task.
